Yanapuma’s Spanish school in Cuenca (Santa Ana de los Cuatro Rios de Cuenca in full!) is situated in the heart of this historic colonial Andean city only two blocks from the Parque Calderón and the Catedrál. We offer the same high-quality Spanish courses that we have offered in our Quito school for the past 7 years, with our team of professional and qualified teachers.
Students can study from 2 to 4 hours per day, up to 5 days per week, in individual classes, small group or couples classes, or in special daily conversation and pronunciation classes. We offer courses tailored to the needs and learning styles of older students.
In addition we have our “Cuenca Cultural” package. This package combines 4 hours per day, 20 hours per week of Spanish classes with visits to some of Cuenca’s cultural treasures accompanied by a teacher. Four excursions per week are included, offering plenty of opportunity for exploring the city and practicing your Spanish at the same time.
This package is ideal for those who want to combine more touristic pursuits with learning Spanish or those who would like the added comfort of seeing the sights with a local guide. And if you have particular interests that you would like to follow while you are in Cuenca we will be happy to arrange visits to alternative sites with a teacher for you.

Yanapuma is a foundation dedicated to sustainable development in indigenous and marginalized communities and all the profits from our school go towards this work. Students are welcome to get involved with the foundation, either through visiting the communities with a teacher while they study Spanish or contributing with other resources. But your support as a student is already a significant contribution!
Our Methodology and Teaching Methods:
Yanapuma has been the leader in Ecuador in adopting the a “communication methodology”promoted by Spain”s Instituto Cervantes, the regulatory body that oversees the instruction of Spanish as a foreign language. Many of us have suffered through boring, grammar-based classes when we were in school or college, and return to language learning with a degree of dread.
The simple principle of Communication Methodology is that the desire to communicate is the essential driver. So rather than boring grammar drills, the focus in classes is on learning to communicate and developing listening, talking, reading and comprehension skills, SUPPORTED BY the necessary grammar learning. This makes the classroom much more dynamic and inspiring, with multi-media and extra resources and activities that make learning Spanish enjoyable. Students will also have the chance to explore beyond the classroom with their teacher in exercises that are extension of the in-class learning.
Students are welcome to book classes by the week, giving them the flexibility to decide how long they will study for.
