We are also moving to Ecuador from Canada. I am a Realtor and a Real Estate Broker as is my wife. We own a real estate company in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and are in the throws of closing it down to move to Ecuador. Be very careful when looking for property to buy or to rent. None of the people who sell property in Ecuador have to write a license. You could set yourself up as a real estate professional. There are no Realtors perse down in Ecuador. A realtor is a member of NAR the National Association of Realtors in the USA or CREA in Canada and as such are governed by a strict set of rules and standards of business practices and ethics. You have no such protection down there. Do your homework well. I recently red a blog from a couple who rented in Cuenca who said, they were asked for $1500 for a rental. They were patient and managed to hold out for $700 and they were happy, until they learned that other non gringo's were renting the same stuff for $300......watch out. Master the language and do your homework and NEVER, just engage someone online. Go meet them. See if you fell comfortable with them. Ask for references. Dont be shy. It's your life.
