Exploratory trip to Cuenca

by Lynn
(Ft. Laudrdale, Florida)

I am taking my 'exploratory' trip to Cuenca in August. After reading much about Cuenca, I am seriously looking into retiring there. I am just a bit nervous about travelling solo! Would love to meet with expats who have made Cuenca their home. While I am quite enchanted by everything I have read, I still have many questions. Thanks so much!!! Lynn

Exploratory trip to Cuenca May 2016
by: Emily and Theo

Hello, Theo and I live just north of Tampa Florida and are coming to look into retiring in Cuenca. I would love to meet up with some expats to get a feel for your experience and ask some logistical questions about preparing for the move. Theo retired from computer industry. I am still working in area of special education. We like exploring, museums, music, festivals. Would love to get a chance to hook up for social time in May.
Looking for a short term rental apt or condo close to City Center that will sleep 3 for $50 per nite or less. Flying in from Fort Lauderdale, is it best to go thru Quito or Guayaquil? Appreciate any insights! Thanks!

Hi Carol,

I was just recently reading an article about a US couple who moved to Ecuador. The wife is in a wheelchair. The link to the site is as follows:

www.ecuadorliving.com/2009/11/02/handicapped-ecuador.html

If you place the following info into your search engine: "US citizens living in Cuenca Ecuador with disabilities wheelchair", you will also see other information relevant to your concerns.

I too am interested in retiring outside the country. I've been looking at both Ecuador and Chiang Mai Thailand, but my financials may not qualify for a Thai retirement visa. So, Cuenca looks more likely. Would be interested in hearing about the experiences of all the contributors on this thread and any information you can offer to help me decide if Cuenca is the best place for me to retire.

Expats with Disabilities?
by: Carol

I am planning to move to Cuenca sometime during summer of next year (2015), but I am in a wheelchair. Does anyone know about handicapped access? I know in the U.S. we have the ADA, Americans with Disabilities Act, which grants full access, supposedly, to wheelchair people and many others. I need to know more. Before I actually fly down to visit, even. Thanks much.

Retiring in Cuenca
by: Lynn

Susan,

I am in the exact same situation as you!! I also happen to live in Florida as well. My mom recently passed and I see no reason to stay here. My kids are grown and doing their own thing. I have planned my 'exploratory' trip to Cuenca 8/20-26. Maybe this is the nudge you need!!! Please do contact me at: lynnpuccio@aol.com. Look forward to hearing from you!
