Single guy considering retiring in Ecuador

by Donald
(Austin, TX)

5th March, 2013

I turn 62 in September, and I too am considering taking early social security and retiring to Cuenca or environs. I'd like to be in country no later than March, 2013, and before that if I can get all my ducks together, as they say.

I'm a Vietnam vet, and I've lived and worked in many places around the world, but never in Latin or South America. I speak a smattering of Spanish at best, but then, I didn't speak any Asian languages when I first landed there, either.

I have zero health issues, and I want to be very active once I get a bit settled. I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, so both the mountains and the sea are attractive to me. But I think I have to choose the mountains because of the climate.

I'd really like to find a combination local / cultural adviser and roommate / housemate or couple or alternatively, landlord. I'm anticipating arriving with not much more than just a toothbrush and a couple of computers, lol. In my travels I've found you don't really need much to get by, nice as it is to have certain things (and I've got a lot to dispose of and/or bring down later). But I am a bit of a neat freak - having my things organized and close by has saved by bacon a time or two.

I don't mind travelling on my own - I've done it plenty, but I do agree it's more pleasant if somebody sympatico (see - I do know some espanol) accompanies you.

At any rate, I'd like to make some arrangements in advance for a place to stay after my arrival. For a month, perhaps 2 or 3, or even longer if everything seems to be working well for everybody. Of course I'd pay rent, but I'd like to keep it within my new social security budget without tapping into anything else.

Any advice? Takers? Offers? You can post responses here, or send to cllist99@gmail.com.

Thanks. Hope to talk with you soon.

Cuenca
by: Anonymous

Hi Donald , I have just sent three months I Euador as a volunteer English teacher. I was baced Iin Machala on the coast. While I was there I visited many other cities including Cuenca. Personally I did not like Cuenca much, too cold for me. This sites pushes Cuenca a lot but thear are many other options some don't rate a mention here. I too would like to retire in Ecuador next year around March. I thought I has all my papers in order this time. I sent them to Gabriala in Quito but she has no experience of prossessing applications from outside US. So put it in the too hard basket which means I will have to start all over again next year.

By the way I am a 68yr old NZ single male. Feel free to contact me.

by: Donald

Sorry folks - I fat-fingered my expected arrival date. It should be 2014, not 2013. I also see my name is not included - it's Donald. Thanks.

Seeking Pen Pals in Loja (June 24, 2012)

by Jerry
(Charleston, SC)

I'm 65 and planning retirement next year (2013. The weather seems to be much warmer in Loja as compared with Cuenca. I'd like to find some on-the-ground english speaking expats in Loja that can tell me what it is like living in Loja.

Namaste: Ecuador varies in elevatins anywhere from 4,000 to 9,000 feet. Temperatures also vary. Along the coast its very hot and humid. Here in the Midddle of the World it is 50-60 at night and 75-80 in day. So where you want to live depends not only on a city but a terrain. We are also building in the mts and the temperature is about the same.

Looking Too
by: Allen

I'm in the same boat Jerry, and i can tell you that Google will be your best Pen Pal. Unfortunately, most of the Web sites down there are owned by realtors, and they're a bit light on info.
First, you need a decent topographical map so you can see (approximately) what the elevations of certain towns & villages are. From there, you can check the average temeratures of those places at a few sites online.
Basically, it sounds like you're looking for something in the Andean "highland" valleys between, say, 4,000 to 7,000 ft. in elevation.

Good luck. I'll race you down there.

Hola from Loja....well, close anyway....
by: Sandra

Hello, I don't know if there are many expats in the Loja area but there are in Vilcabamba, just 40Km south. It's a bit warmer here than Loja, which is a good thing, I'd say.
We shop in Loja a couple times a month but, as far as I know, there's not much for Gringos to do other than shop there.
I love it here and have no intentions of going anywhere else. This is now home!

Single Lady Looking For Travel Mate

I'm retired, single and in good health. I'm planning a discovery visit to EC in September. I have up to 3 months to check things out and decide what area is good for me. I'm interested in the coastal area and would like to find a rental there which would be a home base from which to explore other areas. I will then come back finish up loose ends here and relocate in early 2014. The idea of sharing with someone or two has many positive perspectives. Cost, security etc I have verifiable income to apply for the retirement visa. We would need to connect, have lots of conversation to determine compatibility of interests. If this sounds of interest to you contact me at pattih2@yahoo.com

Not single but my wife and I are hoping to do the same thing. We put off going earlier this year and may even have a friend that will take us to India for a year first. We too are retired, with income and seeking to lease out or sell our house in a poor real estate climate (still!). Stay in touch. I went once to Ecuador/Peru/Bolivia back in 1984 for several months. Loved it then.

41 years old...retired from the military, single, thinking of moving.

22nd June, 2012

OK...heres the deal. I am retired from the military, no debt and make almost $2k a month in retirement pay and also have another income of about $1K a month. Can I easily live on $3K a month in Cuenca? I have done some research and it seems that I could logically enjoy life there on $3K a month. I have an ex that I would very much like to get away from:) Besides being able to live comfortably on that amount of money....was also wondering what it would be like for a man my age to live there. Any thoughts?

Retired Military
by: Charles

Retired in 2005 and still looking for the right place to settle and have been looking into Ecuador.

Have my own ad asking where the best places are to live for single 50 yr. old male who needs a couple pubs, good restaurants, sports and some outdoor activities. NO responses at all for 6 months. I just updated again asking if anyone local responds to the questions.

I saw a couple other sites with other military retirees asking questions about Ecuador and whether or not there were any Veteran Bars (ie VFW, American Legion) but as far as I can tell there are none but would be a great place for a group of locals to start a chapter.

Either way I'm looking to travel within the next 4 months with the ability to travel onward if it's not for me.

Couple of other comments from single guys that indicated Cuenca and Costachi were too quiet and not enough conversation but maybe they weren't trying hard enough. I asked for some clarification from others before forming any opinions if any.

Hope to get more out of this site before going but best of luck.

Might want to check if a military pension will quallify you resident visa. Retirees have to make $800 a month and obtain a residient visa. If not you will have to make a bank investment for visa of 25,000 and 6% interest or buy property for 35,000.

Living in Cuenca
by: Phillip

Cuenca is beautiful, inexpensive and is full of friendly people. If you make some attempt to communicate in Spanish, it is really appreciated and you will be welcomed with open arms. With the income you list, you will have no worries. Get a place with a spare room and I'll come stay in it and clean your house, do laundry and clean the kitchen, though you won't really want me to cook ;-)
