seeking contact with expats in Ecuador

by angela
(italy)

I am planning to retire in Ecuador although I have never visited the country - but will do so before making a decision -. I am Italian, turning 55 in december and would like to share ideas with people who are going to do the same or have already done so.Also I would like to know what the cost of living is really like in Ecuador because I have heard that due to the great number of people moving to this country, prises are rising. So my question is how much do you need to live decently in this place?
Are there places in Latin America which are cheaper than EC? I have lot of interests and would like to be able to share them with like minded people once I am in the country. I love literature, music, psychology and spirituality, and travelling, of course.

Living in Cuenca
by: RIE

Hi Angela,

Thank you for your recent post in our Expat Personals. Ecuador is still a very affordable place to live and with your interests you would probably love Cuenca. It is a beautiful city with many cultural activities.

It is becoming more popular with expats and some say prices on properties have risen but in general your food, rent and utilities are very cheap.

Your monthly spending would most certainly depend on how you want to live. But to live in a nice apartment and eat out at great restaurants and do other entertaining etc you are probably as a single very able to do so on around $1300 per month. Actually you may even have money left over. If you buy an apartment of course then it will be less.

An exploratory trip before moving is well worth doing as it may not be the place where you want to spend the rest of your life.

You may like to look at doing something like the Spanish Immersion Homestay with Lorell.

Wishing you the very best in your future travels.
