Medical Care In Ecuador?

My wife and I are traveling to Cuenca this fall to see if it's where we want to retire. I read one post that the nursing care is not up to the standards of the U.S. which causes me to ask the question.............what about the qualifications of physicians, hospital standards, etc? There are many countries in the world where medical care is equal to the U.S. Is Ecuador not one of these?

Thanks for any input
