Many
people write and ask us about properties for sale in Vilcabamaba. This
may be just what you are looking for. We
met Pierre in September of 2008. Pierre
visited Ecuador to seek a better life for his wife and young
daughter.
In October
of 2008 they purchased a property in Vilcabamba. Pierre has a great
sense of humor and you can read more about Pierre and his wonderful
family HERE
Dixie,
Anita and Pierre in the town square of Vilcabamba. We were fortunate to
be in Vilcabamba in March of 2009 and met up with Pierre and Anita and
of course Emily and see this wonderful property.
Emily aged
5 and her dog.
In
this beautiful and somewhat mysterious place nicknamed "El valle de la
longevitad" (The valley of longevity) Pierre and his
family have established new roots. Currently
they are renting
in the village. Later
they will live on the land that they purchased in San
Pedro. The property Pierre and his wife bought has been purchased from a
family who have owned it for over 100 years. The
land had not been extensively developed or farmed. The
owners did farm goats, donkeys, cows and bulls which roamed freely on
the 76 hectares of mountain.
The
elderly couple who owned the property decided that they wanted to sell
the large property because it was now becoming too much work for them
and they want to build a comfortable home in Loja to enjoy their
retirement. CLICK

The land
has many flat areas suitable for building, an impressive network of
walking trails, springs and waterfalls, 1.5 kilometres of river
frontage, 2 plantations, 2 houses (albeit very basic), many beautiful
forests, spectacular views and much more.
Today,
what was a block of family land has become a fascinating project to
create a complete, liveable, sustainable neighbourhood for 15 families,
a place for the residents to integrate as much as they wish with the
local villages and towns, a place to live surrounded by pristine nature
on the edge of a national reserve, The Podocarpus.
We refer
to this project as "The
Cutanapamba project" CLICK

Below
is a description in Pierre’s own words about Vilcabamba.
“What I
see around me here in Vilcabamba
Ecuador, a small village in the
Andes mountains in a third world country. I am surrounded by skilled
but poor people who have a lot of time but no money. They know how to
grow food and herbs, how and when to plant trees, how to recognise
medicinal plants, how to build houses with dirt and no power tools, how
to feed themselves, how to live 100 years or more (Vilcabamba is called
"the valley of longevity") and much more... These people have
no money, they can only trade their time. However they could do with a
little money to buy what they cannot trade, such as tools or
machinery.”
The photo above shows the village of
Vilcabamba and behind it looking in the north east direction (from left
to right):
- the road to Loja
- the San Pedro village
- the Uchima river
- the road to Sacapo
Cutanapamba is located out of sight behind
the mountain right next to the river. CLICK

The
property’s northern boundary is the beautiful and unpolluted
Rio Uchima (altitude 1650m) which offers drinkable water all year round. This
is also a great trout fishing spot and the property has approximately 1
mile (1.6km) of river frontage. CLICK

Cutanapamba has several natural forests, grazing areas for animals,
springs and waterfalls and an established network of trails suitable
for hiking or horse riding.

There
is a large established plantation of banana trees, sugarcane, coffee,
papayas, yucca, camote and many more as well as a vegetable garden
which are all conveniently located right by the river where the soil is
the most fertile, water in abundance and temperature perfect. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
15
quintas in total are available
on the property. Each quinta varies in size and prices start
at $35,000
and quintas are anywhere between 1 - 4 acres (1/2 ha to 1.7 ha)
approximately.
“A
Quinta in Ecuador is a block of land usually in a rural area and large
enough to build a house and have gardens, an orchard, grazing areas for
animals. A typical size for a quinta would be a few hectares (1 hectare
= 2.5 acres).”
