Eating out in Cuenca is a pure delight. Whether you choose a fancy restaurant, and we do have a few, or the simple $2.5 lunches. We all have our favorites and here are some that we have frequented and hopefully you will too.

Kookaburras - Calle Larga 9-40. Good Food & Fine Lodgings in Cuenca. Thursday - Monday 7am - 4pm

This is a great place to go for breakfast, lunch and afteroon snack or coffee with friends. It is owned by Jenny and Chris, fellow Aussies. The coffee is wonderful and the food is great too. Kookaburras has a great atmosphere and you will always find another expat to to talk with.

Accommodation is also provided at Kookaburras and you can check them out at http://kookaburracafe.typepad.com/blog/ make sure you say hello from Dixie and they will most certainy give you a good Aussie welcome.

Akelarre Cafe

Inigo Sagarna who owns and operates the Akelarre Café.will be happy to serve you one of their special Spanish Tapas or choose from a wide selection of dishes from the Menu. After having looked through the menu I think we need to visit at least once a week to try out the wonderful delicious dishes.

Tiestos is well worth a visit when in Cuenca. It is a little on the upside in price compared to our many other restaurants in the city, but the food and presentation are worth it, and the food is delicious. You can check out more at http://www.tiestosrestaurante.com/en/

Saucelitos – Cnr of Presidente Cordova and Hermano Miguel Cuenca Ecuador

Open for lunch and dinner. The Chef of this restaurant has worked extensively in Germany and has now come back to live in his hometown of Cuenca. He runs the restaurant with his wife. Juan says that his food is a fusion of different flavors. If you are after a good steak or a lamb chop then this is a place you may like to dine at. There are also special $3.50 lunch menus available. You can’t miss it. Just look for the place with the German flag.

Café AustriaBenigno malo y Juan Jaramillo

This is a great place to meet other fellow travelers or just sit and read an English paper while enjoying a coffee or a meal. I love the $3.00 lunches here. They are quite filling and consist of soup, main meal, small salad, fresh juice and a desert. We have also been for dinner and generally a main meal is around $5-$6. Very tasty.

Molienda CaféHonorato Vasquez y Hermano Miguel

Run by a delightful Colombian couple this little restaurant serves Colombian food. We have been here many times for a later breakfast which generally will cost you around $2. The food is very tasty and I recommend lunch and dinner anytime.

From memory the above is a breakfast for both of us. The coffee is missing and a juice. The bill was about $5.

The Hotdog above is at a store I am yet to revisit, sell for $1. I have been told that they ae the best Hot Dogs in town. I must admit they are not bad at all.

RaymipampaBenigno Malo y Parque Calderon

I love taking new guests here as it is right in the centre of town overlooking Parque Calderon and next to the new Cathedral. It serves Ecuadorian food and is a very popular restaurant with tourists and locals. A great place to enjoy the start of the day for breakfast. Generally breakfast starts at $2.00.

Good AffinityGran Colombia y Av de Las Americas.

This is a Vegetarian restaurant and serves Taiwanese food. We have been for the lunch menu which is different every day and consists of soup and main course (quite a good serving) and a fresh juice. This menu is $2.25.

Sankt FlorianCalle Larga y Luis Cordero

This place has the most beautiful décor. The lunch menu again is wonderful at the price of $2.50. Soup, main meal, fresh juice and desert. Well worth visiting. The menu is a varied international fare and well worth trying.

Here are a few others you may wish to try.

Monday Blue - Mexican - Cnr of Louis Cordero and Calle Larga. Great Burritos and great prices. Funky little corner restaurant.

Mediterraneo - Honorato Vasquez 7-64 y Luis Cordereo. Great Italian and beautiful decor.

El Tunel - Cafe Bar restaurant - Honorato Vazquez 6-80 y Presidente Borrero - Great special lunch menu for $2.50
